P&MM Director Wins Prestigious Accolade At Incentive And Motivation Awards

John Sylvester, Director of Motivation at P&MM has received an ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Incentive and Motivation Industry’ award.

Motivation Awards 2015In appreciation of his efforts to improve the motivation industry over the past 30 years John was recognised in front of industry colleagues at the 2015 Incentive and Motivation Awards, held on the luxurious Silver Sturgeon yacht on the River Thames. Attendees were treated to an evening river cruise which featured food from Jamie Oliver, and entertainment from vintage singing trio, The Bombshell Belles.


John’s achievements in his field over the years are numerous and have made a big impact in the motivation agency world.


In 2005 John co-founded the first and only diploma in motivation in the UK alongside the Institute of Promotional Marketing (IPM) and fellow members.

The IPM Diploma in Motivation is a qualification specifically designed for the reward and recognition industry. It is the aim of the Diploma to increase standards of professionalism in the industry and provide a benchmark for employers.

John has now also become Head of the Education Committee at the IPM, giving his time to improve the quality of education available to industry professionals and to tutor them face to face.


John has been at the forefront of a number of highly innovate products and services, just some of which are highlighted below.


First to utilise prepaid technology

John was responsible for the launch of the first prepaid card to be used as an employee incentive tool to the UK B2B marketplace in 2006. Currently 81% of the total UK card loads in the prepaid B2B open loop card market come via a P&MM platform.


First to offer employees cashback via prepaid

John’s Spree card product is capable of offering unlimited cashback savings to employees of organisations of all sizes at over 50 well known retailers. It is also very affordable for the employer, with minimal administration, a suite of complimentary communications as standard and value added special offers each month.


Transitioning clients from paper to plastic

John has overseen the migration of many B2B programmes in the past few years from paper vouchers to plastic gift cards, with 55% of the total volume of orders placed on plastic by the end of 2014. He also oversaw the launch of reloadable gift cards e-voucher codes on numerous schemes in an effort to deliver cost efficiencies for clients through savings on administration and postage.


Taking employee recognition home

In 2012, P&MM introduced a personalised celebration toolkit, whereby employers can give vouchers and gift cards to employees in recognition of their birthday, wedding, the birth of a child or any other special occasion or spot reward. This allows employers to celebrate the special occasions in the private lives of employees, on top of their ‘on the job’ achievements, breaking down barriers between employee and employer.


First to launch e-prepaid card solution

In late 2014 John oversaw the introduction of the UK’s first electronic version of a prepaid card (e-Spree) used on an employee reward programme.

In addition, as HR director within P&MM, John very much practices what he preaches. He has taken the company into the Sunday Times Top 100 companies to work for list on several occasions (most recently achieving a coveted 2 star accreditation), achieved ISO accreditation and become a Gold rated Investor in People.

John makes regular contributions to industry press and offers his advice at conferences / seminars throughout the year. A keen blogger, John has written over 1000 posts relating to key industry topics and offering advice to employers on how best to run their motivational programmes, sharing best practice and analysis conducted on P&MM programmes.

He has created employer tools such as P&MM’s Employee Engagement Calculator and co-authored whitepapers alongside workplace physiologists to give valuable insight into the minds of employees so that employers are better prepared to effectively motivate.

John continues to ensure that P&MM and its dedicated voucher division (The Voucher Shop) are at the forefront of incentive and recognition technology and deliver a huge selection of rewards, suitable no matter what scheme a client may be running. An ongoing programme of system developments ensures that clients benefit from the latest innovations in delivery, administration and communication. All the while John remains the figurehead for the organisation, striving to foster strong retailer, supplier and client relationships that are of mutual benefit to all.
